What happens when old ropes can no longer be used? Ghost Fishing UK has established an active partnership with local fishermen based out of Brighton Marina to recycle their old ropes to the Ocean Recovery Project or to local artists who use items such as the leaded rope to produce door mats.
Operations Officer Fred Nunn said:
This is an ideal opportunity to train divers how to identify various types of plastics commonly used in ropes and netting. Ropes and nets can be separated into recyclable and non-recyclable, with recyclable materials being sent to the Ocean Recovery Project, and many non-recyclable products being provided to local artists.
Ghost Fishing UK would be interested to establish a local volunteer crew who could process the nets and ropes into different material types. This could then be collected and sent to be recycled more efficiently and in greater quantities than we can currently do ourselves. If this could be you, please contact us, we’d love to hear from you!
